AltMed Clinic's Philosophy in action

Understanding Alternative Medicines

Flower-derived remedies, commonly known as medicinal cannabis, are alternative treatments considered when other or previous medications have not been successful. They are available in various forms, including oils, tinctures, extracts (e.g., CBD oil), raw, and/or dried products. These originate from the Cannabaceae family of flowering plants, which may contain cannabinoids such as delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), cannabidiol (CBD), and cannabinol (CBN). It's important to note that the use of cannabis products derived from these plants may involve exposure to a mixture of cannabinoids.

While rigorous study is ongoing, the definition of flower-derived alternatives for medicinal purposes is based on currently available evidence and will be regularly updated as new research emerges. AltMed Clinic, guided by information from the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) – the Australian government authority responsible for evaluating, assessing, and monitoring therapeutic goods – does not promote or endorse the exclusive use of alternative treatments. These treatments are regulated by Australian State and Territory legislations. AltMed Clinic accepts no responsibility or liability whatsoever for any person's misinterpretation of this definition.

Our Comprehensive Assessment Process

At the initial consultation, our accredited Medical Practitioners conduct a thorough assessment. This includes a full medical and mental health history, review of current medications, and evaluation for possible drug dependence and substance abuse. We may also consult other doctors to obtain relevant health information. If alternative therapies/treatments are deemed suitable for you and your condition, our doctors will apply to the TGA (Therapeutic Goods Administration of the Australian Department of Health and Ageing) for approval before prescribing.

Convenient Medication Collection

Patients have the option to collect their prescribed medication in person from AltMed Clinic, or they can opt for secure and fast delivery via our nominated courier service.

Applicable only if approved by the TGA.

Important Disclaimer

At AltMed Clinic, we offer a variety of alternative products from various companies. Providing these products does not imply any affiliation with or endorsement by them. Our doctors maintain full independence in their medical decision-making, which is determined by various factors specific to each patient's needs.

Things to Consider Before Choosing Alternative Treatment

Transparency is key. Please review the important information below regarding alternative medications.

Important Considerations:

  • Alternative Medications are generally considered an experimental or investigational drug with limited data for specific treatment recommendations. For more information, visit the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) website.
  • Alternative medications are not registered in Australia for all conditions by the TGA and are accessible only through Special Access Scheme pathways.
  • Their benefits and harms in children, pregnancy, and breast-feeding are not well investigated.
  • They may interact with current medications and cause side effects.

Potential Side Effects of Alternative Medications (especially with THC):

Possible side-effects may include, but are not limited to: Asthenia (abnormal physical weakness or lack of energy), Confusion, Disorientation, Dizziness, Drowsiness, Vertigo, Sleepiness, Sedation, Balance problems, Coordination, Memory problems, Diarrhoea, Dry Mouth, Fatigue, Hallucinations, Anxiety, Paranoid thoughts, Increased appetite, Vomiting or Nausea, Cannabis use disorder, Cognitive impairment, and Chronic bronchitis (if inhaled/smoked).

For personalised medical advice, please consult your doctor. Medicinal flower-derived alternatives in Australia are regulated by the Therapeutic Goods Administration and can only be prescribed by certified medical professionals. More details can be found on the TGA website.
